On Samsung phones with 12MP or higher resolution cameras, the brand’s Camera app captures images in the 12MP resolution by default, even if a phone has a higher resolution camera. It does so that it can utilize pixel-binning technology and advanced multi-frame processing to offer high-quality pictures in a small file size.
The stock camera app also allows you to capture images in the full resolution of the sensor (48MP, 50MP, 200MP). However, when you choose this option, you don’t get the benefits of pixel-binning or the additional picture processing that you do with the default 12MP mode, which keeps most people from taking this route.
On the other hand, Apple iPhones, apart from letting you take pictures in 12MP and full resolution, also allow you to capture images in 24MP resolution. This is a great middle ground, which combines pixel-binning, advanced multi-frame processing, and small file size from the 12MP mode and higher details of the full resolution mode.
You can capture images in 24MP resolution on Samsung phones too. However, only with the ExpertRAW app (only on Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S25). This adds an additional step of opening a separate app to take 24MP photos. Well, that's why Samsung seems to be considering offering the 24MP mode in the stock camera app too.

On Samsung’s Community forum for Korea, a user requested the brand to bring the 24MP resolution mode in the Camera app. In response to it, a moderator replied that they would consider it, suggesting that the brand might bring 24MP mode to the stock camera app.
We hope that Samsung makes this feature available to all Galaxy phones with a camera sensor above 48MP or 50MP resolution. On Galaxy S25 Ultra, this feature could allow people to take 24MP images from ultrawide and periscope cameras as well as they have a 50MP resolution.
